Community Empowerment

At the heart of GECCo and Development Trusts who are members is the empowerment of local people to make real lasting changes to the area that they live within.

In, 2015 the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act was launched/passed by the Scottish Government.

“Research has shown that when communities feel empowered, there is:

  • greater participation in local democracy
  • increased confidence and skills among local people
  • more people volunteering in their communities
  • greater satisfaction with the quality of life in the neighbourhood

Better community engagement and participation leads to the delivery of better, more responsive services and better outcomes for communities.

In 2015 Parliament passed the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015to give new rights to community bodies and new duties to public sector authorities. “   Source:  https://beta.gov.scot/policies/community-empowerment/

GECCo members and the wider third sector empower communities on a daily basis and therefore welcomed the Act and look forward to working with Government and the public sector.
